Self-taught graphic recorder.
Growing up, I used doodling as my main tool to retain information. My school notebooks were adorned with sketches and short hand—providing me, the visual learner, with a visual reference to mirror my teacher’s lesson plan for that given day. Graphic recording and facilitation are valuable methods of capturing and communicating ideas in groups. It allows people’s voices to be heard, for ideas to be own-able, and for progress to be seen. Below are a collection of recordings that I’ve done over the last two years.
01/ SILVERSNEAKERS
SilverSneakers pitch live recording captured a user journey through three-phases.
My first time doing live graphic recording was for a pitch in Nashville, TN for SilverSneakers. During the pitch, I recorded a user journey parallel to our team’s presentation narrative. Prior to the pitch, I researched the journey and planned out a way to map this visual journey in three key phases, time boxed what would be feasible in the 20 minute segment (20 minutes goes by fast!), and prepared for whatever suggestions or visual elements the client could mention to add in so they know their voices were heard. This pitch resulted in a two-year engagement and an email from our Client saying that they still have not erased the user journey off their whiteboard.
02 / Girls Who Code Isobar Event
Branded event and room set-up to set the tone.
Some of my favorite recordings are done before an event even occurs. In this case, I created a wall mural in our conference room for a Girls Who Code event to showcase the timeline of the day. Since our visitors were new to the big city, I used a skyline to showcase Isobar’s different company offerings.
03 / PIZZA HUT CLIENT REVIEW
An opinionated PizzaHut review—visualized.
Color coding client feedback (green) and internal feedback (red) allows for a visual recap of who said what and to what degree. This Pizza Hut graphic recording was done with zero prep or knowledge of what was going to be said. Containing elements, a key of bullets, and color usage are great tools to keep related elements together—especially with fast pace dialogue of ideas and feedback.
04/ GUN AND GANG VIOLENCE BRAINSTORM
Internal VR brainstorm in efforts to try to find ways to bring solutions to gun and gang violence in Chicago with the help of tech.
For Isobar's NowLab, I jumped into a meeting about Gun and Gang Violence amongst teens in Chicago. The group of students that were discussing the topic were all South Side Chicago residents who were able to avoid becoming involved in gangs. Through their experiences and insights, we took a look at how we could pair VR and technology to help combat this ever-growing issue.
05/ Principles of Graphic Facilitation Workshop
Doodler's Unite Final Exam
In June of 2017 I flew to San Francisco to attend the Principles of Graphic Facilitation Workshop at The Groves Consultants International. There, I spent three days immersing myself in the world of both graphic recording and facilitating with 15 other people. Upon arriving back at work, I collected my learnings into a graphically recorded PowerPoint to share with my company’s creative department and those who could benefit from recordings in their meetings. See slides below!
06/ CULLIGAN WATER PITCH PREP
Room prep for Culligan Water Pitch.
When a client comes to the office, it feels nice to see a familiar face—or in this case, brand. When Culligan was coming to Isobar, I prepped the room with their logo, images of their target market in a faux-gallery wall, custom water bottle labels and more. Everything from the types of blue and white beverages to snacks were thought of to let our client know that we understand their brand. And, we won the pitch!
